With Veranoa Hetet
You can use a range of materials from embroidery silks to butchers string and Macrame twine, woodland jute.
Threads suitable for Taaniko are readily available online and in most haberdashery or craft stores (if you have one where you live and if delivery is available in your country).
We also have an online supplier based in NZ who delivers worldwide but not during Lockdown. Our supplier sells taaniko sampler packs with thread that Veranoa has selected. Packs come in various colour combos.
We have negotiated a 10% discount to our students but once again, this service is not currently available due to Lockdown
Just a pair of scissors (although on flights, Veranoa cuts her thread on a dental floss cutter)
Coloured pencils and graph paper is handy if you want to create your own designs
You will receive access to an online portal from our website where you can view your lessons whenever and as many times as you wish
Part-time, you should be able to work through the lessons within 1-2 weeks.
Most people can start weaving taaniko within a week.
You will have 12 months to access this course.
Kia ora!
When anyone asks me why I weave, I always say "I Weave, I Breathe!" - that's how much weaving means to me.
I'm from a family of Māori carvers and weavers. The women in my family have been weaving and teaching weaving for generations.
My mother, Erenora Puketapu-Hetet, and I spent decades together teaching Māori weaving techniques to people throughout New Zealand and the world, in tribal settings such as Marae, tertiary institutions, private training establishments, museums, and other places.
Taaniko is just one of several traditional Māori weaving techniques our family specialise in. Taaniko happens to be one of my favourite techniques. If you visit my facebook page Māori Weaving with Veranoa Hetet you'll see just how much I love Taaniko and the kinds of things I weave with this amazing technique.
I can't wait to share the joy of Taaniko weaving with you.
I just know you're going to fall in love with Taaniko!
