MAORI WEAVING FOUNDATION 

Online Course


Pre-requisite: None

Suitable For:
Absolute Beginners as well as those keen to refine their Raranga technique

Time Required: 8 - 12 weeks very Part-time

Access to course via the App: 12 months


In this course you will 

  • Gather harakeke - NZ Flax
  • Prepare harakeke for weaving
  • Hāpine whenu - soften harakeke for weaving
  • Understand Basic Tikanga - cultural values associated with Māori weaving

You will also weave:

  • Kono - simple four-cornered basket
  • Konae - simple two-cornered basket
  • Kono Roa - simple oblong basket
  • Tāpiki - finish
  • Whiri Mekameka
  • Whiri - 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10 plait 

 

Course Fee $220 NZ 


*Minimum Value of course $600

*The minimum value of the course is based solely on what it would cost to buy four of each of the three items that you will learn to weave in this course.  Most students weave at least 3-5 of each item during the course, saving money weaving baskets for their home and as gifts while many also go on to sell their work, exceeding the cost of the course many times over.

Pre-requisite: Module 1 of The Matrix: Foundation
Time Required: 8 - 12 weeks very Part-time

Access to course via the App: 12 months

This course will give you the foundation skills and the confidence you need to weave Raranga.
By the end of this course you will have woven:

  • a tissue box cover
  • a konae with flap for a purse
  • a six footed basket
  • decorative stitch
  • how to dye harakeke using commercial dyes

AND learn to cast on with fine whenu

Time Required: 3 - 6 months Very Part-time

Access to course via the App: 12 months

By the end of this course you will have woven:

  • Kete Whiri 
  • Kete Whiri Rua - for moenga pepi (baby sleep baskets)
  • Kete Timata

PLUS - you will be able to 

  • dye whenu (weaving strips)
  • split whenu for finer kete

KETE WHAKAIRO Online Course

Time Required: 4 - 6 months very Part-time

By the end of this course you will have woven six kete whakairo, each with a different pan- tribal pattern.

WHAARIKI I
Essentials


Pre-requisite: Module 2 of The Matrix: Foundation
Time Required: 8 - 12 weeks very Part-time

Access To Course Via The App: 12 Months

This course will give you the key skills and the confidence you need to weave a Whaariki from natural harakeke.

The weaving of patterns in Whaariki will be covered in Whaariki II the Advanced course due out by end of April 2019

Of Taaniko

 

Pre-requisite: NONE

Time Required: 4-12 Weeks part-time

Access to course via the App: 12 months

Materials: Taaniko materials - suggested for sampler piece you will weave in this course: macrame twine, knitting, butchers cotton twine, knitting silks, embroidery threads. 
Note: Wool is not ideal as it stretches too much.

Material Cost: About $30 
Silk embroidery threads available from most haberdasheries or craft stores worldwide and online.

By the end of this course you will know how to

- Weave using the Taaniko technique

- Design Taaniko patterns

- Cast on for Taaniko

- Finish a row

- Add in whenu (weft threads)

- Add in aho (warp threads)

- Finish a taaniko piece

PLUS you will weave

- a Taaniko sampler

- a Taaniko purse

AND

You will know how to weave a Wallhanging.

You will also have the skills to weave a belt, guitar strap and other similar items.

 

COURSE FEE:  $320 NZ
